When you go to a zone defense, you are working as a single unit with alot more defensive help if the opposing team "burns" or beats your teams player. The reasons why teams choose to play zone is if the opposing team is a bad shooting team or the opposing team has an effective center or forward. Going to a zone defense makes it difficult for the opposing team to shoot close range baskets. Also zones are used to rest players and cover-up for poor one on one defensive players. The idea of going to a zone defense is to make up for a team not being able to defend players on a one-on-one basis.

Man to man is a better defense if all 5 players are able to guard speed for speed and inch for inch. If not then this poses an advantage to the team on offense and they are able to score with less scrutiny. There are some famous coaches out there that stricly recruit guys based on their zone play. Such as Jim Beoheim at Syracuse. Hes renowned for his 2-3 zone and he gets players that fit well into that scheme. I liked playing zone in highschool cause it was easier first off and it allows for more takeaways. Instead of concentrating on one person, and following them around the court, you control a certain area, and make sure that you guard who ever may come into that 'zone'.Hope it helps.A zone defence can be used for numerous reasons over man to man games zone games zone. It's a good way to cover for having a slower weaker defender on your team to start with. It allows you to deny penetration into the lane and layups or easy kickouts without having a big guy to protect the rim or great on ball defenders games zone. It can force a team without good shooters to try and shoot over the zone and beat you from the outside. It's a hard defence for a team without a good PG/strong ball handler to break down or a disciplined offensive plan. It can be a good way to shut down a team with a dominant post player if you can deny the ball to him/her and/or force a quick kick out by doubling quickly after they catch it. Or can be useful just to change up the pattern of a game a bit and give the opposition a different look on defence for a while.

- If you team is outmatched athletically or physically inside than zone is better because it becomes easier for teammates to help down low or with quicker point guards.
- Zone is also better if you have playing against a team that is a poor jump shooting team.
